Lake Orcadie

2019

Lake Orcadie (Gyroptychium agassizi) is a diamond point engraving on hand drawn window glass installed in The Byre, Latheronwheel, Caithness, Scotland, and experienced with the backdrop of a field of grazing sheep.

Based on a Devonian fossil fish found in the nearby Achanarras Quarry, the work evokes a spectral presence of a time when the area was at the bottom of a lake. Gyroptychium agassizi is an early ancestor of those who evolved limbs to emerge from the waters.
The work was supported by Bullseye Projects with a two week residency in The Byre and the studio at Northlands Creative, sponsored by Bullseye Glass.
